Canada is known for being the most immigration-friendly country in the world. It’s also a lovely place to visit, with a broad range of natural beauties, historical landmarks, and diverse cultures.

A visitor visa, commonly known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), is a type of immigration document that allows foreign citizens to visit and stay in Canada. If you are traveling to Canada as a student, temporary worker, or merely to visit, you will require a visitor visa unless you are from a visa-exempt nation.

What are the Minimum Requirements for a Canadian Visitor Visa?

A Canadian visitor visa applicant must:

  • hold a valid passport;
  • be in good health;
  • have a clean criminal record;
  • have the financial ability to support your stay in the country;
  • show travel itinerary and air tickets both to and from Canada; and
  • provide proof of employment, family, and financial assets.

What are the Required Documents?

The 9 crucial documents that you need for a Canadian visitor’s visa are as follows.

1. Passport

You need a valid and genuine passport to apply for a visitor visa in Canada. You are required to provide two photocopies with the following information as visibly clear as possible:

  • issuance and expiry date
  • Passport Number
  • personal information, such as your photo, name, and date and place of birth.

2. Photos
You must provide a minimum of two pieces of passport-sized photos as part of your application.

3. Proof of Funds
As part of your application, you must provide proof that you can support the family for the duration of your visit. This requires that you provide:

  • bank statements;
  • proof of employment that can prove your annual earnings;
  • financial support evidence from either friends or family that says they’ll cover your expenses for the duration of your stay;
  • proof of income from your host;
  • tax filing documents for the previous 3 years; and
  • other financial documents like property, shares, and the like.

4. Cover Letter
You are required to create a declaration to the Government of Canada in the form of a cover letter detailing why they should grant you a visitor visa.

5. Invitation Letter
Should you be visiting friends or family, you need to provide a letter of invitation from them.

6. Visa application form
You need to download the visa application form through the IRCC website, then submit all the relevant documents, such as photos, fee receipts, passport photocopies, among others.

7. Travel Itinerary
You need to provide a complete plan of the trip, including the places you’re going to, the routes you’re going to take, and to and from air tickets.

8. Memorandum of Association and other documents
If you are self-employed, you should provide a Memorandum of Association and other supporting documents.

9. Documents of Proof
These documents will serve as proof to the visa officers that you do not plan to stay in Canada for longer than your visitor visa allows. This requires that you submit:

  • proof of employment or an employment contract that describes your job role, your status as a permanent employee, and an expected return date for work;
  • proof of lease, property dealing, or documents that prove that you intend to return to your home country once your trip ends.

Keep in mind that if you are a student, ID cards are mandatory. If you are retired, you need to provide pension slips and proof of retirement. These are both supplementary to the above-stated document requirements.

How Do I Apply For A Visitor Visa?

1. Check your eligibility and figure out the documents you may need for COVID-19.

2. Gather all relevant documents that show proof that you meet the COVID-19 travel exemption AND all other requirements for a visitor visa.

3. Create an account with the IRCC and apply online. Make sure to upload all the relevant and required documents and pay any required fees.

4. Provide photos and fingerprints (biometrics)
If your local visa application center is closed due to COVID-19 restrictions, research other measures aside from biometrics, which will depend on various factors.

5. Wait while your application is processed. If it’s incomplete, it will not be processed and will be sent back. If it is complete, you can proceed to the next step.

6. Send your passport and follow the instructions to get your visitor visa.

7. Get ready for your trip to Canada. You may be required to carry documentation submitted with your visa application with you or to provide extra documents to a border services officer upon arriving in Canada.
